Theoretical ATPL(A) – On-site training

INTRODUCTION: TRAINING OPTIONS - ATPL(A)

To reach the airline pilot theoretical certification, two options are possible:

A – Integrated training

This training is also called “ab initio” training, since no specific aeronautical experience is required. Candidates register to a flying school to follow a complete training program.

Various flying schools decided to subcontract the theoretical part of the training to the Institut MERMOZ.

Thus, the Institut MERMOZ signed privileged partnerships with ASTONFLY (located in Toussus le Noble), TRIMAILLE AERO-FORMATION, AEROPYRENNEES and DSA (Czech Republic).

The Integrated option is mandatory for candidates that would not be PPL licensed.

B – Modular training

This option enable candidates to carry out a step by step training to reach the ATPL license.

  • First, trainees have to validate their PPL license. The theoretical part can be easily validated at an Aeroclub. The Institut MERMOZ can help you selecting a nearby Aeroclub thanks to its partnership with the French Aeronautical Federation (FFA)
  • Next, trainees have to validate their theoretical ATPL. Two options are possible :
    • Carry-out a full time training program (9 months), in French or English, at Rungis or Toussus le Noble.
    • Carry-out a distance training program, that includes a two weeks “on-site” session.
  • Then, trainees have to validate a proper amount of flight hours. They also have to select a flying school to prepare for the CPL license and IR rating.
  • Finally, trainees have to validate their MCC rating (Multi Crew Cooperation) at a flying school.

All of these steps are independent from each other.

ATPL(A) - On-site training
INTRODUCTION

The theoretical ATPL(A) training program is to be followed at our premises in Rungis/Orly (94), or at APA Training (TOURS airport).
.

It may be carried out in either French or English. The new EASA program includes the “100 KSA” module.

It enables trainees to reach the ATPL(A) theoretical certification (Airline pilot).

Training sessions start every year in March, June, September and December. They are composed of 14 different courses, divided into 3 training modules, representing 750 hours. Two mock exam sessions and around 20 evaluation tests are also scheduled so that trainees can prepare for the exam in best conditions. All of our instructors are experts in aeronautics or associated fields (Airline pilots, Air Traffic Controllers, Aeronautical engineers, Lawyers, Meteorologists…).

Health status 2020 // The Institut MERMOZ has received approval from DGAC to carry out video conferencing courses. These virtual classes enable trainees to follow up their teaching program. See video clip.

2021 / Satisfaction rate: 100%.

TRAINING PROGRAM

The ATPL(A) is composed of 14 courses :

  • 010 Air law
  • 021 Aircraft general knowledge (Airframe and systems, electricity, power-plants, emergency equipments)
  • 022 Instrumentation
  • 031 Mass and balance
  • 032 Aircraft performance
  • 033 Flight planning and monitoring
  • 040 Human performance
  • 050 Meteorology
  • 061 Navigation
  • 062 Radionavigation
  • 070 Operational procedures
  • 081 Principles of flight
  • 090 Communication
  • 100 KSA
OBJECTIVES

The objective is, firstly, to pass the 13 ATPL theoretical certificates.

Beyond that, this program aims at preparing our trainees for their future professional life in best conditions.

A solid theoretical base is a must have for any airline pilot, particularly when working on a type qualification.

New 100 KSA certificate :

The new 2020 program includes the « 100 KSA » module, that aims at working on the « core competencies » required for pilots.

This brand new module is made of three parts :

  • Group tests :

Trainees have to work as part of a group on specific scenarios where « core competencies » are assessed.  The objective is to evaluate and support them, focusing on strengths and weaknesses. Three group evaluations are made.

  • Initial assessment :

As part of a group, trainees have to work on a non-aeronautical situation. An interim evaluation is made to monitor their progress. A final evaluation is made in the form of a simulated flight.

  • Introduction to mental arithmetic techniques:

The objective of this part is to develop calculation skills, and to introduce mental calculation techniques.

This brand new « 100 KSA » module has been developped by the Institut MERMOZ to help trainees improving their “non-technical” skills and to understand the airline selection process.

CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION

Candidates selection is based on their application and evaluation. The following items are required:

  • Class 1 medical fitness
  • Pass an evaluation test based on mathematics, physics and electricity (High school level)
  • Pass and English proficiency test
  • Hold a valid theoretical and practical PPL(A)   (modular training only)

The objective of the evaluation test is to ensure candidates have sufficient knowledge to carry out an ATPL training. This is not an eliminatory test. Candidates may carry out an update training session to successfully prepare for the test.

Terms

It is mandatory that trainees follows-up the full training program to be able to undertake the official DGAC exams.

Evaluation tests and mock exams are scheduled all along the program to ensure trainees acquire sufficient knowledge.

The training is composed of 3 modules. An individual debriefing is to be made at the end of each module by the Institut MERMOZ’ head teacher.

Candidates carrying-out an integrated program must register in one of the following flying schools:

In such case, the Institut MERMOZ works as a subcontractor, providing the theoretical part of the ATPL training.
